In this weekrsquo Security Levity: a reply to a couple of reader questions about spam filtering techniques. Specifically, the types of techniques that can be used when the senderrsquo reputation is lsquo;grayrsquo;. What do I mean by lsquo;grayrsquo; reputation Senders have gray reputation when messages from the same sender mdash; an IP address range, a domain name or an actual email address mdash; are a mix of legitimate email and spam. For example, most free mail services send both spam and good email and so have some level of gray reputation. Anti-spam systems award a gray reputation to sources that are they simply do not know how to classify. What can we do about email from gray sen hydrojug traveler ders In the good old days of spam filtering, wersquo;d simply fall back to examining the email content. Wersquo;d look for keywords that indicated spam, or use statistical techniques to see if it looked like spam wersquo;d seen before. But looking at the content is, in the jargon, expensive. In other words, it uses a lot of computing resources mdash; fine back in the day, but not so much with todayrsquo huge spam volumes. Also, content filtering techniques can be less accurate than wersquo;d like. There are better techni stanley cup ques we can use before resorting to brute-force content scanning. Move over HAL, Clarissa is here. Itrsquo been 36 years since Stanley Kubric introduced movie goers to the HAL 9000, the intelligent computer in the 1968 movie, 2001: A Space Od owala flasche yssey. Now Xerox and NASA are demonstrating a voice-operated computer system for the International Space Station. Clarissa, a fully voice-operated virtual crew assistant, is designed to give astronauts hands-free access to stanley cup uk the intelligent computer system by allowing them to give speech input and receive spoken res polene ponses as they go about their work. The effort is a collaboration between the NASA Ames Research Center and Xerox Corp. It will be demontrated for the first time at June 26 at the Association for Computational Linguistsrsquo; 25th annual meeting at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Using Clarissa will allow astronauts to execute the more than 12,000 complex procedures required to maintain life-support systems, inspect space suits, conduct science experiments, and perform other tasks. Just try to analyze a water sample while scrolling through pages of a procedure manual displayed on a computer monitor while you and the computer float in microgravity, says astronaut Michael Fincke in a Xerox press release.Although Clarissa isnrsquo;t yet operational, astronaut John Phillips will complete the Clarissa training procedure onboard NASArsquo International Space Station as early as June 27 in preparation for later use of Clarissa, according to the |
