SAN DIEGO, Calif. 鈥?Scientists are getting closer to understanding one of the vexing mysteries of COVID-19: why some people hardly notice the infection while others get hit with stanley mug  severe disease.A study by a team of San Diego scientists adds to a growing body of research suggesting the answer lies in our genes.Using a first-of-its kind 3D mapping technique, researchers at La Jolla Institute for Immunology identified 12 high-risk variants for COVID-19.The team showed these variants interact with genetic switches that can send certain immune cells into a frenzy, causing inflammation in the l stanley cup ungs that is the hallmark of severe COVID-19.LJI computer scientist Dr. Ferhat Ay said the 3D map was critical to their findings. The first-of-its kind map, published in December in Nature Genetics, opens the door to a greater understanding of a range of diseases, including cancer and asthma.Traditionally scientists have viewed DNA like a long strand, but the map allows researchers to see DNA as it truly is inside c stanley mugs ells: like a bowl of spaghetti.By looking at DNA in three dimensions, researchers are able to see sections that correspond, even though they may be far apart in the genetic code, Ay said. Thanks to genetic research like this, people can get an individual prediction of their risk of COVID-19 with a cheek swab or saliva sample. Users can upload their DNA results from sites like Ancestry or 23 and Me to a website called Sequencing, which will scan their genome for signs of high-risk var

Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie was in the intensive care unit for seven days with COVID-19, he revealed Thursday, and he admitted he was  wrong  to not wear a mask at a ceremony for Supreme  stanley cup Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett. He was released from the hospital October 10, after checking  stanley cup in on October 3.Christie said he thought he was in a  safe zone  at the White House, where many thought testing would protect them from the virus. Christie was at higher-risk for serious complications from COVID-19 because he is overweight and suffers from asthma.                                         I believed when I entered the White House grounds, that I had entered a safe zone, due to the testing that I and many others underwent every day,  Christie said in a statement.  I was wrong.  He had also spent hours with the president helping him prepare for the debate against Joe Biden in early October.Christie was one of many people connected to the president and White House who tested positive for COVID-19. The president, First Lady Melania Trump, Barron Trump, counselor Hope Hicks, top aide Stephen Miller, former counselor Kellyanne Conway, and more in the president s orbit have tested positive.         No one should be happy to get the virus and no one should be cavalier about being infected or infecting others,  Christie warned.Mr. Trump has since said he f stanley cup eels better than he did before he contracted COVID-19, insisting he feels well enough to  kiss  the men and women in the audienc Eujl Power restored in Downtown Detroit after major outage
Hurricane Lane grew to a Category 4 storm on Saturday, but then weakened Sunday morning to a Category 3 as it moved closer to the Central Pacific basin, the National Hurricane Center said. As of 11 a.m. ET Sunday, Lane was located 885 miles east-southeast of Hilo, H asics awaii. The storm s maximum sustained winds are 120 mph, and it s moving west at about 15 mph. Forecasters say Lane is expected to lose power as it continues west-northwest over the next few days. The current forecast track has it passing south of Hawaii s Big Island, CBS Honolulu affiliate KGMBreports.                                        There have already been strong storms in the Pacific Ocean in 2018, and water temperatures in the Pacific Ocean off San Diegohit a record high this month. While hurricanes are virtually unheard of in California, conditions could potentially raise the threat.                This graph shows the projected path of Hurricane Lane o stanley cups n Sunday, Aug. 19, 2018.                                                      National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration                                         It could happen, especially if the ocean temperatures continue to stay in this anomalously warm state,  said Art Miller, an oceanographer.        Scientists at the Scripps Pier have been recording historic temperatures in the Pacific Oc jordan ean as high as 79.5 degrees. That s about 10 degrees above normal.Jamie Yuccas contributed to this report.
